Are VVS Diamonds Real?

Diamonds have always been a popular way to commemorate milestone events, show commitment, and express undying love. This stunning gem will always be the stone of choice for those looking to impress with an elegant token of appreciation.

After the 4Cs (cut, clarity, color, and carat), assessing the diamond as a VVS diamond is the first item that appears while searching for diamonds online. It's a state that appears with others like VS1, SI1, and SI2. What does it imply, then? Hmm, let's find out.

What Are VVS Diamonds?

Diamonds graded as VVS are real diamonds despite having tiny flaws that are invisible to the human eye. The answer is yes, VVS Diamonds are genuine diamonds.

When it comes to clarity, VVS diamonds are considered to be of the second-highest grade. The inclusions in a diamond must be very small or unnoticeable at 10x magnification for it to be categorized as a VVS diamond.  Thus, VVS diamonds seem flawless to the human eye, however they contain minute flaws but they are100% real.

On the diamond grading system, VVS means "Very Very Slightly Included." Diamonds of this grade have the fewest imperfections that the naked eye can see. In addition to VVS, there are two further categories called VVS1 and VVS2.

A diamond's durability, brilliance, and shine are all diminished by inclusions. The fewer and smaller the inclusions in a gemstone, the more quality it will be.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

The clarity of a diamond describes the number and size of inclusions inside it. Many diamonds contain flaws, some more noticeable than others. A diamond is said to be "internally flawless" if it is free of any flaws (IF). This is almost identical to VVS.

The clarity of a diamond directly affects its value.

The presence or absence of inclusions in a diamond determines the diamond's clarity grade. The GIA clarity scale takes into account several factors. Size, type, quantity, placement, and relief are all elements that influence how a diamond's clarity is measured and how inclusions are regarded. The higher the inclusion size, the greater the influence on the clarity grade. If the inclusions are significant enough, they may affect the stone's durability.

Clarity Scale For Grading Diamonds

The clarity scale used by most labs includes five levels:

  1. Flawless (F)
  2. Internally Flawless (IF)
  3. Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2)
  4. Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2)
  5. Included (SI1, SI2, SI3)

Note: In a diamond-graded graded as Flawless (F), no inclusions are seen with magnification under a 10X loupe.

Conclusion

Very, very slightly included describes the clarity grade known as VVS. A diamond has inclusions that detract from its total value since they are inherent imperfections. Despite this, diamonds graded as VVS remain very desirable and pricey, third only to the Flawless and Internally Flawless categories. VVS diamonds often have negligible inclusions like pinpoints, clouds, internal graining, or feathers.
